What you are about to read may possibly surprise, enlighten, or simply help you. But one thing is clear - you'll have a greater understanding of what is really happening in the martial arts and self defense industry.
There is so much misinformation, sensationalism, and competition that even the most knowledgeable people don’t have all the facts. I hope this article clears up some of the confusion and provides you with some basic knowledge to properly evaluate the best type of self-defense methods for you. So the first step is to explain the different categories of martial arts.
TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS
The first category is traditional cultural fighting arts. This includes every style from karate, Hapkido, Kenpo, Escrima, Aikido, Kung Fu, to the countless other cultural fighting arts that have been developed throughout history by almost every civilization on the planet.
Most of them can be fun to do, all are very interesting, and they all provide an information about martial art theory.
NO traditional fighting art has dominant effectiveness in the modern world. This means that Aikido, Karate, Kung Fu, and even Israel's "Krav Maga" is not proven to be the most effective self defense system!
Traditional martial arts are a an excellent place to explore a method of self discipline, learn complex martial skills, but it isn’t the same as self defense.
COMBATIVE SPORT
Combative Sports include Olympic judo, Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai kickboxing, all forms of wrestling, western boxing, and most recently MMA (mixed martial arts) which has been popularized by events such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
In combative sport you are forced to prove the effectiveness of your methods and skill in live, regulated, combat. There is no guesswork, no debate. It either works and you win, or it doesn't work and you lose. Hence the appeal to non traditionalists. Everybody in the world saw Combat Sport Brazilian Jiu-jitsu stylist Royce Gracie easily pick apart the cultural fighting art practitioners in the first few Ultimate Fighting Championships.
If you watch Olympic Judo or Olympic greco roman wrestling, you'll see the highest caliber athletes in the world competing in a sport that the entire point is to establish dominant position.
And while Combative Sport is a very important component of testing the validity and effectiveness of a martial art - it too is not real self defense.
It is a training and conditioning method for self defense. Combative sport is what you use to train yourself to see how you do under stress conditions and against an opponent with the same intent. This is not self defense.
Remember that the rules, regulations, and referees that are required in a combative sport are NOT going to be there when someone is trying to kill you in a dark alley!
There are no bad martial arts and there is no perfect martial art. It is mostly dependent upon the practitioner and their ability to be prepared and use their skill. It must be simple and effective. I will show you how to get 20 years of experience in 20 hours.
SELF DEFENSE
A true self defense system must be combat proven. It must be simple. It must be effective. It must be able to work against larger and stronger attackers. There are no rules, there are no safety nets, there are no second chances.

If you love to learn new fighting tactics, you’ll “get it” within seconds of seeing what I will show you. If you consider yourself a "casual" student of self defense, you’ll “get it”. Even if you have no experience, this is simple... it has to be.
- It doesn’t matter what your current skill level is.
- It doesn’t matter what your experience is.
- It doesn’t matter whether you’ve never been in a violent situation before.
- It doesn’t matter what shape you’re in.
- It doesn’t matter how out of shape you’re in.
- It doesn’t matter if your mammalian predatory brain is active or not.
